Tournament formats
What each format does, team limits, and how ties are decided.
Auto Tournament has five tournament types. The first four use fixed teams. Shuffle uses single players and makes new teams every round.
| Type | Teams | Rounds |
|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128 | One loss and the team is out |
| Double elimination | 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128 | Two losses and the team is out |
| Round robin | 2 to 32 | Every team plays every other team |
| Swiss | 4 to 64 | ceil(log2(teams)) rounds, for example 3 rounds for 8 teams |
| Shuffle | At least 2 × team size players | One round per map you pick |
For the four team formats you also pick the match format: best of 1, best of 3 or best of 5. All of them use map veto. Shuffle always plays one map per match and has no veto.
Single elimination
A normal knockout bracket. The winner of each match goes to the next round. The loser is out. The team count must be a power of two. If you have 6 teams, add 2 teams or use round robin or Swiss.
Double elimination
Teams start in the upper bracket. After the first loss a team moves to the lower bracket. After the second loss it is out. The team count must be a power of two.
Match names show where a match is: UB R1 M1 is upper bracket, round 1, match 1. LB R2 M1 is in the lower bracket.
Grand Final Mode decides the end:
- Simple (default): one grand final between the upper bracket winner and the lower bracket winner.
- None: no grand final. The upper bracket final decides the champion.
Round robin
Every team plays every other team once. Standings decide the winner. A series can end in a draw in round robin.
Swiss
Every team plays in every round. Teams with the same record play each other.
- Round 1 is made when you create the tournament. Each next round is paired when the round before it is finished. Until then its matches show Waiting for pairing.
- Inside a group with the same record, the top team plays the bottom team.
- Teams do not play the same opponent twice, unless there is no other way to pair the round.
- With an odd number of teams, one team gets a BYE each round. A bye counts as a win. No team gets a second bye before every team has had one.
- Standings are sorted by wins, then fewest losses, then Buchholz (the total wins of your opponents), then round difference.
- When the last round is done, the team at the top of the standings wins.
Shuffle
Shuffle is for events without fixed teams, such as a LAN or a community night. Players compete alone. Before each round, Auto Tournament makes new teams that are as even as possible, based on each player's rating.
- Pick the maps. Each map is one round.
- Pick the team size, from 2 to 10 players per team.
- Register the players. You need at least 2 × team size, for example 10 players for 5v5.
- If the player count does not split evenly, some players sit out a round. Players who sat out are picked first next round.
- The leaderboard sorts players by match wins, then rating, then average damage per round (ADR).
Match rules
These rules apply to every format.
Max rounds
Max Rounds per Map is 1 to 30, default 24. A team wins the map when it has more than half. With 24 the first team to 13 wins. With 4 the first team to 3 wins.
Overtime
When a map is tied at max rounds:
- Enabled: normal overtime until one team is ahead. You can limit the number of overtime periods.
- Disabled – draws allowed: the map ends as a draw.
- Disabled – no draws (damage tiebreak): no overtime, but the map always has a winner. The plugin compares total damage, then kills, then headshot kills, then utility damage. If all are equal, it uses a fixed coin flip based on the match and map number. This needs Auto Tournament CS2 (formerly MatchZy Enhanced) 1.4.30 or newer.
When a series ends level
A series can be level after all maps, for example when draws are allowed. Auto Tournament then compares maps won, then total rounds won, then damage.
In single and double elimination, if the series is still level, the match gets the status Needs admin decision. An admin opens the match and picks the winner. The bracket then continues as normal. In round robin and Swiss the series ends as a draw.
